Even if there are people out there who state that SEO is a delicate issue, do not worry because it isn’t that much of a mystery after all.
Of course there are all these technical expressions with which experts are juggling day in day out (SERPs, SEM, Page Rank, Vertical Search, Algorithms or Keyword Density), words that must confuse the novice, but with a little training and the comprehension of a few basic concepts everybody can handle their own SEO activities.
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization is what the Gurus refer to when it comes to having your Web Site or Blog specific content listed on a good position in the major known Search Engines like Google, Yahoo or MSN. The individual content of your pages is getting analyzed by the Crawlers or Bots and then some Algorithms will determinate the keywords for which your content will be shown as a search result.
So, for example let us say that someone is performing a search for a specific keyword with Google search, and that keyword happens to be the subject of your article or page content, then you will want your page URL get listed as high on top of the list as possible.
Here are 10 simple SEO strategies that should accomplish exactly that goal, getting you a good SERP. Rest to know that search engines like Google constantly work on their page rank algorithms. This in turn demands a certain amount of flexibility to the user.
- 1. Content, Content of high Quality. High Quality Content is the Alpha and the Omega to get listed at a top position. In Google’s struggle with the competition, the thing that makes users come back to Google is that it is serving the “best” Search Engine results. So it becomes evident that if a page with poor and short content is getting compared to one with a lot (at least 1000 words) of high quality content, the first one looses out. Search Engines are a business. And their survival depends on their capacity to evaluate good from bad content. And they do have gotten quite good at this in the past few years. Thus, content theft and or use of double content are recognized and appropriate actions are taken. Usually a page containing double content will not get indexed or will get indexed but will result to show on page 35 of the Search Results page.
- 2. Keywords – use Keywords and understand how they work. It is important to analyze your content for the keywords you have chosen. There are programs out there you can use to do this in two directions. First, your content and the number of times your keyword appears. Second, the amount of pages on the web with that same keyword and the search volume per month for that specific keyword.
- I use http://rainbow.arch.scriptmania.com/tools/keywordgenerator.html which is an awsome little tool. It allows you to copy and paste your content, then click a button. The program will count how many times each word appears.
- To analyze the web based keyword density I use http://tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook/index.php which allows you to perform a search for your keywords. It returns a detailed list of information about daily search volume per search engine. Further you can select to see trends and keyword suggestions. Really a great tool.
- Example: On Google I performed a search for “SEO Tips”. Google came back with 1,700,000 search results. The very top of the list is www.seo-writer.com/reprint/top-seo-tips.html, which I visited. I copied the content of that page and pasted it into keywordgenerator. The result is: SEO 6 times, Tips 4 Times. That isn’t a whole lot but it seems to work well for the guys from seo-writer. Of course their whole web site concentrates on the subject of SEO which further promotes their ranking.
- So with these tools you can build your content to suit your needs and to be SEO friendly.
- 3. Site design Factors play an important role in SERP and PR. Some things just don’t work well with the Spiders. For example IFrames or java script snippets and Flash content are things that will decrease the SERP. IFrames for example are still not being indexed by the Search Engines. Thus it is not a good idea to use them.
- It is a great Idea to use a Sitemap. Sitemaps allow the Spiders to know beforehand which content to index. There are a lot of free Sitemap creation tools out there. One example is http://www.auditmypc.com/xml-sitemap.asp. All you have to do is create the Sitemap, then upload it to your root directory of your Site, and then ping Google at http://www.google.com/addurl/
- The Page Header is important too. The Meta Data is located in the Page Header. Meta Data or Meta Tags consists of the Title which should be from 60 to 70 characters long, the Meta Description which should not exceed 160 characters and the Meta Keywords, maybe 5 or 6 should do.
- It is a good Idea to optimize the Meta Data for best results. Thus the Title and Description should reflect your Keywords in a way that attracts visitors when they see your search results.
- Use an URL that matches your Keywords. Have your Keyword in the beginning and end of your content page.
- 4. Since Google is the most used Search Engine you should concentrate 90% of your Search Engine Optimization Efforts on the Optimization for Google Search. But don’t leave MSN and Yahoo completely behind. They might just bring some extra unexpected traffic once in a while.
- To be efficient with the Google Website optimization use Googles Webmaster Tools at http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools and Google Analytics at https://www.google.com/analytics/home.
- With those tools you will be able to recognize eventual issues of your site and eliminate them.
- 5. Build Backlinks from other Sites or Blogs. Backlinks will help you in two ways. First, the more Backlinks Google finds out there pointing to your Site, the better your PR, second, any Backlink might drive some extra traffic to your Site. Make sure that you put your Backlinks on related and relevant Sites only. If your keyword is “Flowers” e.g. don’t put a backlink on a Site using “Fuel”. If possible the Backlink should be integrated into a short keyword rich Anchor Text.
- 6. Another way to get quality backlinks is using the Article Marketing System. By writing short 400 to 500 words, keyword rich articles and submitting them to some 4 or 6 of the major Article Directories you will get lots of backlinks without a whole lot of work. You may want to check out The Phantom Writers or Isnare, they are two of the top Article Directories around.
- 7. Consider the use of On Site Traffic Hubs like Squidoo. Traffic Hubs are like a section of your site, concentrating on one sub-theme. E.g. your main subject are flowers, then roses would be the sub-theme. You can add content there and edit it to your needs. It is a free service.
- 8. Why not integrate a Blog like WordPress on your Site. WordPress has become one of the biggest Blogging Software around. It is an easy install, SEO friendly Blogging Program that has a well structured content and allows for SEO Plugins to be used. Search Engines like WordPress a lot.
- 9. Use Social Bookmark Sites. Social Bookmarking Sites have been around for quite some time now and some of them have become very popular. Sites like MySpace or FaceBook or Twitter or the media news sites like Digg or Technocrati are very helpful concerning your SEO efforts. Join some of them and use them.
- Have your pages prepared with Social Bookmark Buttons. That way readers can add your page to their content easily. For WordPress exists a plugin that will do just that for you.
- 10. The “Leitfaden” or main plan. Don’t forget to sit down and develop a strategy concerning your SEO efforts. To do this in an efficient way it is important to have sound knowledge of SEO, how it works and what can be done with it. It is not enough to do just some SEO, you will be wanting to do extremely effective SEO. And effective SEO is about Relevance, Authority and Conversion.
Assure that your site or your sites content is relevant towards the topic or niche you are going for. The content has to be adapted to and stay in relation with all your other sites of this niche.
Search Engines will love you if you establish an authority on your niche. Use sites with closed themes. Form partnerships and linking with other authority sites of your subject.
Conversion is another main goal in your SEO efforts. By conversion I refer to visits that became buyers or visits that signed up for membership or just returning visitors.
Search Engine Optimization isn’t difficult at all. It all depends on your personal effort to achieve all of the above through hard work and endurance. If you are devoted, then SEO will give you the Traffic you have been looking for. And don’t fall for those Gurus who want to sell you some kind of magic potion promising thousands of visitors in no time and with no effort. That just doesn’t exist.
